Niche Marketing

Finding niche marketing topics is a matter of knowing how to determine what people are interested in reading about and where those people congregate online. The first step is to choose a large topic. Most website owners start with a very large topic, such as politics, sports, gardening, parenting, religion, or pets. The key is to start with one of these “biggie” topics and move into smaller and smaller topics until you find an appropriate niche marketing topic.

Once you have a large topic in mind, do a bit of searching online. Try searches for related terms using various search engines. Read what you find on several websites and make note of anything you find missing. What’s missing is where you can fill in the gaps with innovative niche marketing. If you’ve noticed, for instance, that “radical feminism” is largely absent from any political websites on women’s rights, then note it and use that as a launching pad for what your niche website will focus on.

After a bit of research on what is out there, you will need to begin to determine what people are looking for on a particular topic. Take some time with keyword research tools to determine what people want to know. Visit a few forums related to a topic, including the forums on the pages you already visited. Do you see questions or problems coming up repeatedly? You may be able to find a very specific niche topic by looking at what people seem to ask frequently but not get the answers to. Spotting these trends is what will make you effective in niche marketing.

The first two steps in finding niche marketing topics should leave you with quite a few possibilities but nothing definite yet. Take the topics you are considering. Begin to search for products related to those topics. These products include books and apparel but also other niche-specific items. Remember that advertising dollars drive your site. Even if you plan a paid subscription site, you will need money from advertisers to make your site financially successful.

When you are considering products, think about them in two ways. The first consideration is how much you will make from the affiliate revenue on sales. Do you think you can make enough money through sales to make pursuing this angle worth it? The second consideration is whether you will be able to provide the content potential advertisers will want to see when they are looking into running ads on your site. Try to match your potential site content to advertisers’ needs and see if you think you will have a good match.

This research should lead you to one or two possibilities for your niche marketing site. The research into what is out there and what people want should begin to take shape for you and help you determine what is missing. The key to being successful quickly is to provide content people want but cannot get elsewhere. Providing that content will be vital to your success.
