Freelancing can be Lonely: How to keep Burnout at Bay
from:Deb St. George, Publisher, GettingToSuccess.com
Freelancing is one of those jobs that sounds much more glamorous than it really is. In reality, freelancers often work alone for hours or even days at a time and for those who live alone, it can be a truly lonely existence. Whether you live alone or have a family, balancing your freelancing life with the rest of your life can be tricky. Following are some tips to help freelancers stay balanced.
Give Yourself A Day Off
One of the perks of being a freelancer is that you get to set your own schedule, but far too often, freelancers end up working more hours than they did when they had an outside job, especially in the beginning of their freelance career. But everyone needs a day off to recharge their batteries, spend time with family or friends, or just do absolutely nothing. No matter how much you enjoy your work, you need that down time and interaction with other people.
Exercise
Most online freelance jobs involve sitting at a desk or computer several hours each day, which can wreak havoc with your body if you aren't getting regular exercise. Take advantage of your flexible schedule by taking a walk around the block at least once a day or at least jump on the treadmill for a few minutes. If you live alone and can afford it, consider joining a gym. That way, you can exercise and interact with other human beings at the same time. Eat at your desk and consider your trip to the gym your lunch hour if you must justify it but getting out regularly will ensure you get a little sunlight, exercise, and see people at least now and then.
Go out for Coffee
Yes, it's cheaper to take your coffee in and it's healthier to forget it altogether but going out for a coffee or a juice a few times a week is better than staying cooped up in your office all alone. Freelancing is tough enough without going stir crazy so if it lifts your spirits, or even if it doesn't, force yourself to get out of the house before monotony sets in and you begin to dread going to your desk.
Do What You Love
Nobody gets into freelancing for the money; most people start freelancing careers so they can do the work they love. Freelancers are a breed unto themselves; they don't mind sacrificing in order to do the one thing that makes them happy instead of hammering away at a job they detest. That being said, hating your job isn't a good enough reason to freelance. Although the lure of making money at home on the Internet is strong, those who don't bring a strong talent or skill with them may be sorely disappointed to find out that freelancing may not be all it's cracked up to be. That's because, in order to survive as a freelancer, you have to love what you do and do what you love.
